Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood (2019)

Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood is certainly not where I would start if I was taking you on the Tarantino journey. The unapologetic violence and tension of Reservoir Dogs or vehement spirit on cutting Pulp Fiction would be the best entries. But if you're primary goal is to tick off the movie bucket list, or simply see a coup de maƮtre of cinema, this is as good a place as any to start.

The meticulously laid pieces in this story merge in the most unexpected way and it feels like you're watching multiple films woven into each other. So yeah, it's Tarantino alright. Every individual story is structured and paced in such a way that we only ever see what we're supposed to and all the actors are given great material to work with.

Just when you think you've seen the best Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have to offer you're hit over the head with a narration by the smooth tones of Kurt Russel and introduced to the charming confidence of Marvin Schwarz, played by Al Pacino. Margaret Qualley's sweet but crazy performance as Pussycat is one to look out for too. If you remember her amazing execution of Jill Garvey in The Leftovers you'll be impressed by her transformation here.

Speaking of transformations, the attention to detail in the scene blocking, extras, vehicles and props is something to behold. And it's this hand-crafted flawless characteristic that binds all the elements to seal this love-letter to 1969 Hollywood.

Quentin Tarantino is a powerhouse - there's no denying that. After The Hateful Eight graced screens back in 2015 there were whispers of a 3rd Kill Bill, but what he would actually bring to cinema next was anybody's guess. And I'm so glad this was the project he chose because it really takes you through all the emotions and gives you an ending that screams in relief for you.
