The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

It'd be too easy to say this film is about the pursuit of truth. In this thriller/mystery, the purveyor of blind justice wakes up to a sophisticated evil - one that hides under the cloak of innocence and therein lies the real message.; there is no client as scary as an innocent man.

Defence lawyer Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) typically works for your garden variety criminal to make ends meet. When a colleague points him in the direction of a wealthy realtor's son accused of assault, pay day finally comes through. But the details of the case pique Haller's curiosity and the questions he asks himself are more than he bargained for.

There's a lot to like here. McConaughey's performance is the most obvious, and the chemistry between him and Marissa Tomei as Haller's ex-wife, DA Maggie McPherson, only strengthens that sentiment. It certainly doesn't hurt that the soundtrack is filled to the brim with classics like 'Don't Sweat The Technique' and 'Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City', especially when the more cinematic pieces blend seamlessly between them. And it's a nice change of pace from the over abundance of visual effects in top-tier cinema from that period.

Back in 2011 when 'The Lincoln Lawyer' was first released, McConaughey was known more for showing his abs than showing his acting chops. This was a true turning point for his career and it reminded audiences of his brilliant portrayal in 1996s 'A Time To Kill'. It's no 'Primal Fear', but with a great cast and some focused storytelling, it stands up 10 years later with relative ease and earns a deeper look, or at least another casual viewing.
